About

Huey Liew has over 30 years of experience and a Chartered Professional Engineer, specialising in improving and making commercial and industrial HVAC systems more efficient and affordable. He has won awards for his HVAC designs and is passionate about the Energy Hierarchy. One of his engineering accomplishments is a HVAC system that uses 70% less energy than similar systems.

Huey thinks that the top three priorities of the Energy Hierarchy can help solve the main problems related to the energy trilemma: affordability, security, and environmental sustainability.

👍 The 1st priority is "waste not."
👍 The 2nd priority is to "improve efficiency."
👍 The 3rd priority is to "capitalise on renewable energy."

The right balance in our energy trilemma helps uplift people and countries out of poverty.

Huey has carved out a niche to redesign the HVAC system to align with the Energy Hierarchy's top three priorities. He is a prolific blogger on HVAC matters, where he often shares his experience on his website, www.PracticaHVAC.com and LinkedIn. He often advises on how to improve HVAC and Building Management System (BMS) functions, including energy benchmarking and condition monitoring for predictive maintenance.

Huey also enjoys mentoring engineers; other engineers regularly approach him for advice. He often holds online webinars, workshops and discussions on HVAC system designs and digital marketing strategies. Huey is available for consulting on both HVAC systems, value engineering and digital marketing for engineers.

Huey still holds to the 'Ancora Imparo' motto of his alma mater, meaning 'I am still learning.' He successfully completed the Haroun Education Ventures MBA Program®.

His personal view is "problems come with opportunities; happiness is solving problems."

Huey is available for HVAC advisory, designs review or alternative designs to capitalise on the Energy Hierarchy.

Huey designed the University Of Adelaide Hub Central's 465kW central indirect evaporative air conditioning. When most air conditioning system start to "fall apart" during the peak of summer, the Hub Central HVAC system operates at peak efficiency and saves more than 70% of energy cost of comparable chilled water or DX systems.

When most air conditioning system start to "fall apart" during the peak of summer, the Hub Central HVAC system operates at peak efficiency and saves more than 70% of energy cost of comparable chilled water or DX systems.

    Interesting facts
    * The central indirect evaporative cooler plant cost was approximately 75% of comparable chilled water system
    * Life cycle costing (AS/NZS 4536:1999) over 25 years was 16 times lower than comparable chilled water plant

    Application
    * Factories with high internal heat load
    * Application where single pass flow is required
    * High air flow volume application such as clean rooms and data centres
    * Shopping complexes

Limitation of the indirect evaporative coolers
    * Not suited for areas with high ambient moisture content
