The numbers tell the story! This is the story of when one of my clients, Andrew came to me worried that he wasn't profitable... But when he came to understand his numbers he realised profitability wasn't actually his problem.. This is why understanding your numbers is so important. Want help? Comment 'numbers' and we'll send you the deets to download our Tradie Profit manual. #aussietradies #motivation #businessowner #melbournetradies #tradietips #tradieslife #businesscoaching #tradieaustralia #tradesbusinessowner

Know your numbers - a phrase you’ve doubtless heard thrown around, if not by me (though you most likely have if you follow our stuff) then by accountants or bookkeepers. So, you understand the relevance of the phrase and the importance of the topic area. I’m not repeating myself because we’re out of content topics, understanding your numbers is something that will always be a pertinent topic of interest for trades business owners. If you want to start managing your finance properly, you can start by looking into these very important numbers in your business.

Apples to apples comparison Isaac lost one last week - a$650k job he thought he was going to win. He's a builder, had a slight personal connection to the client and really thought he was the builder for them throughout the sales process.......until they introduced a second builder who has come in considerably less expensive for the job. He doesn't yet know how much cheaper the other guy was or how he managed to be considerably cheaper. The guy is new to town, maybe he's got skinnier margins because he wants to win the work. Maybe he's playing the building game - come in cheap and with a skinny scope make it up with variations along the way. My mate doesn't know. He knows he built his quote with some contingency because he knows they'll be demanding. So he protected himself a bit. His scope isn't skinny, it covers most of the things they said they'd want, or that he thinks they'll want. He doesn't want to piss them off with lots of variations along the way. He wants their job to go smoothly without distress about extra costs. This is a hard sell, though, isn't it? "With me, you won't get nasty surprises; look I've included all this stuff in the quote" "Maybe check whether your other guy has included all the same stuff in his quote" The problem is, it's too late for that. He has a personal relationship so maybe he can find out some more about what the differences were, now he's lost the job and he can probably get some info on how well it went when the job is finished. But his apples are probably not the same as the other builder's apples, are they? His are probably rather better and therefore more expensive (Let's face it, subcontract trades all cost the same, carpenters and builders all want to be paid well. Unless, there's a mistake or something weird happening, there's unlikely to be a large difference in prices) The lesson is that it's your job (builders and all trades) to explain to your customers what kind of apples you're providing at your price and how they can compare your apples at your price to the other guys' apples at his price. If you don't do that, they probably think all apples are the same, don't they?
