Let’s address the practicality: For brute strength the deadlift is undeniable, however most average everyday tasks rarely involve lifting a heavy barbell from the ground in a symmetrical, controlled manner. For many, the benefits might not directly translate to their daily lives in a functional way as this move is often touted. 2. The deadlift’s symmetrical stance and straight-line motion can be at odds with the body’s natural inclination for asymmetrical, dynamic movements. Over time, this can potentially lead to imbalances, especially if deadlifting becomes the primary focus in your strength training routine. 3. It places substantial stress on the lower back and spine, which can be a concern for both beginners and seasoned lifters. While back squats certainly offer some benefits like leg strength, core engagement, and improved bone density, it’s important to consider the individual risk-reward balance. 1. Consider the practicality. How often do everyday activities require us to squat to the ground with our body weight or more loaded on our shoulders? Rarely! 2. Back squats are typically executed in a symmetrical stance, which may not align with the asymmetrical, reciprocating movements our bodies naturally engage in, such as walking and running. Imbalances can be exacerbated when this symmetrical pattern is consistently loaded. 3. Last but not least is that the sheer compressive force of having heavy loads on the spine can pose risks, both for experienced and novice lifters.
