A well-deserved recognition for Isaac Froby, our recent outstanding achievement award recipient 👏 Currently in his first year as an apprentice, Isaac has come a long way. He has faced several challenges, working hard to meet the high standards required for painting the luxury apartments at Civic Heart. Now, he is progressing in leaps and bounds, gaining a much better understanding of the job. His field officer Jarria said, "Isaac feels confident with the tasks set before him, and in the past few months, I have received regular calls from his host, Profile Painting, praising his work and great attitude." This bi-monthly recognition celebrates painting apprentices for their exceptional performance, as acknowledged by their field officer.

Applications for the 2025 school-based pre-apprenticeships are now open! This program is a great way for students in Years 11 and 12 to work towards a trade qualification in plumbing or painting. It is fully funded by the Department of Training and Workforce Development & Construction Training Fund. Upon course completion, students are awarded Certificate II in plumbing/painting and the qualification count towards their final school grades. MATES in Construction WA has been at the forefront of raising awareness about suicide prevention and mental well-being in the industry. We are pleased to have them lead a seminar at the 2024 MPA Skills and Galvins Plumbing Supplies WA Plumbing Industry Expo on their General Awareness Training (GAT), a program aimed at achieving 100% suicide awareness on-site and in the workplace. The one-hour session introduces workers to the problem of suicide and mental health in the industry, describing behaviors that could indicate a workmate may be at risk of suicide and how to help by following a few simple steps. The session will be led by Mark and Leon. Mark has over 30 years of experience as a scaffolder/rigger. With his extensive construction background, Mark understands the hardships in the industry and has been with MATES for nearly two years, passionately working to reduce the suicide rate. Leon has over 20 years of experience as a ceiling fixer in residential and commercial construction. Having personally encountered mental health issues, Leon, who has now been with MATES for nearly three years, is focusing on supporting the well-being of those in the construction space. Leon and Mark, who coincidentally share the same surname, are both leading the rollout of the MATES apprentice program, which aims to upskill the industry's future tradespeople.
