An NDIS registered provider specialising in social care for the elderly and people with a disability

About us

Like Family is on a mission to reduce social isolation and loneliness. We help Australians who are ageing, ill, injured or living with a disability to connect with social support in their local area. Our support workers, who we call Social Carers, assist with activities that promote community participation and independence, like help with household tasks, exercise, transportation, skills training, and a buddy for social events. We believe in creating meaningful and long-lasting relationships. For this reason, we combine matchmaking algorithms with a dedicated Customer Care team to connect Members with the right Carer, not just any carer. If you’re looking for social support for yourself, a loved one or a client, you can contact us at 1800 545 332 or hello@likefamily.com.au Note: Like Family rebranded from Home Care Heroes in 2020.

A heartwarming reminder of the power of connection and companionship. ❤️ Support workers play an important role in people's lives, particularly those struggling with loneliness and social isolation. These stories serve as powerful examples of how a single visit can improve someone's well-being.

For many people, engaging Support Workers is their way of addressing #loneliness. I had the opportunity to speak with one of our Members and their Social Carer. She said “We have a really good laugh. Basically, I entertain her with all my stories. If I have cleaning around the house to do, she helps me." “The truth is,” she said, conspiratorially, “He comes here and moves everything about and when he leaves, I go round to put everything back where it should be.” They both laugh. #Supportworkers play a vital role in addressing loneliness for many individuals, fostering companionship and connection. As one member shared, the time spent with a social carer often involves laughter and shared stories, offering both practical assistance and valuable #companionship. Despite the humorous chaos that ensues during their visits, the genuine connection shared between support worker and Member is evident. These relationships not only alleviate loneliness but also enhance the overall well-being of those they support, fostering a sense of belonging and connection in their lives. 🧠 Social isolation leads to reductions in brain cells and mild cognitive impairment. Recent research published in Brain Structure and Function sheds light on the impact of social isolation on brain health. The study, conducted on male C57BL/6 mice, revealed that isolated mice experienced reductions in brain cells, particularly in areas crucial for memory and sensory processing. The study involved dividing mice into two groups: one subjected to social isolation and another group housed together. Behavioral tests, including the Three-Chamber Social Approach Test, and biological assays were employed to assess changes over time. At 90 days, isolated mice exhibited decreased neuron and oligodendrocyte counts in brain regions like the hippocampus and olfactory bulb. Despite maintaining social interest, they struggled with social recognition, indicating impaired ability to differentiate between familiar and new contacts. These findings underscore the importance of social interaction in early life for brain health and cognition. Further research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms impacted by social isolation could inform early detection of #mentalhealth risks and the development of targeted treatments. #socialisolation #wellbeing #research #leadership

Mother's Day is right around the corner!💐 We know that there are so many challenges that mums from all walks of life face, especially when dealing with the transition back to work after being away on maternity leave. This year our co-founder, Jenna Leo, sat down with us to talk about some of the challenges and wins she's had over the past few months returning to work after giving birth to her second child. She talks about the physical and mental challenges, such as social isolation, that have come with these changes and how she's overcome them by leaning on female founder communities like Apropela (formerly Heads Over Heels) and her husband and co-founder, Mathieu Bertrand. As we celebrate the wonderful mothers and mother-like figures in our community today, let's remind them that they are not alone in their journeys. To all the mums in our community, thank you. We see you and are so thankful for all you do!❤️

With our core mission to reduce social isolation and loneliness, mental health is at the heart of what Like Family do. Over 43% of Australians have faced a mental health disorder at some point in their lives, and more than 1/4 of the 4.4 million Australians living with disability have a psychosocial disability. Come hear from our team how we’re supporting the local community in Newcastle at the One Community Ready-Set-Connect Mental Health event tomorrow morning.
