“I first came across Evan when I contacted his company Good Nuts in around 2005 hoping to do some business. I was immediately struck by Evan's friendly manner and his very genuine interest in both myself and my company. Who am I? Where am I from? What do we sell? How do we operate? Where do we source our stock? Evan has a thirst for knowledge. I am pleased to say that since that day we have remained in contact, firstly on a supplier/customer basis, but long since as valued friends. We have both since moved on to new challenges. Having seen Evan operate his own business first hand, I can say that his business nous is outstanding. To this day, I don't think I have ever struck a business as stream-lined, efficient, clean and with such happy staff as Good Nuts when Evan was running it. He is an exceptionally capable businessman with outstanding organisational skills and an ability to think strategically to develop a company's success. When it comes to business, he knows what he is doing and he has practised what he preaches. Since he sold Good Nuts I have watched Evan develop numerous new business ideas and consult to many other businesses and organisations, always with positive results. Having been the beneficiary of his counsel many times I can attest to the fact that his advice is always sound, succinct and well thought out. He knows what works in business, he's been there and done it, and he has broken it down into clear strategies that he can use to help others as a consultant and or mentor. If you are a business owner and you feel like your company has stalled or is in need of a fresh insight, I strongly recommend having a chat to Evan. He is the real deal. He will listen to you, he will inspire you, he will advise you, he will set out clear goals and strategies to achieve those goals... and you will probably have a friend for life. ”
About
I went into business for myself believing that I would have more time and more money to pursue the things that were important to me. There were lots of ‘ups and downs’ along the way but I managed to meet my initial objectives - eventually. I cannot claim to have done it by myself however; I had many good mentors that helped me along my many journeys. They taught me the importance of human behaviour (mine and those around me) and its impact on business decision making, the finer skills of ‘letting go’ and knowing where the focus needs to be and how to lead by example instead of managing or doing the bulk of the work myself. On reflection, it was only hubris that kept me from asking for help earlier.
By combining my own business experiences with what I learnt academically (Masters degree in Business Coaching), I now help guide small and medium business owners to get back all those initial ideas and dreams they had when they started their own business.
Ultimately, they need to understand that good leadership requires good:
Staff: Finding reliable staff, knowing how to onboard them, and how you can help them to stay motivated to deliver great work.
Relationships: Understanding you have to build and maintain strong and respectful relationships with your staff and clients (amongst others) but that your own needs and that of your family are always at the forefront of why you are in business.
Direction: Lewis Carroll said, “If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.” SME owners tend to be reactionary, i.e. quickly try and take advantage of opportunities, quickly try and sort out problems, quickly move on to the next challenge. You always need to be clear why you are in business, that you have a goal, and a strategy (which road?) to reach your goal.
