Leading Para-Pickleball Athlete & National Community Engagment Liaison Officer @ Cocoon SDA Care

Yesterday we hosted our first (of many to come) Pickleball x NDIS Fun Days with my awesome colleagues in Victoria at Cocoon SDA Care A day of hearing stories of Para Athletes and then getting everyone on the court for a hit! What did we aim to achieve? That the NDIS sector isn’t just about providing supports in the same old way every day. Sport & Rec is the missing link in daily supports and it’s time we change this ❤️ Watch this space cause what we have brewing is going to be amazing. If you’d love to collaborate and do something hit me up and #letsconnect #paraathlete #advocacy #parapickleball #morethenjustyourbasicsupports #watchthisspace #pickleballmeetsNDIS

Bound to a wheelchair due to C5, C6, and C7 spinal injuries, Martyn Ford has not only adapted to life as an incomplete quadriplegic but has also thrived as a para athlete. 💪 Demonstrating incredible resilience and determination, Martyn has pushed past perceived limits to set new benchmarks in the world of para sports. 🏆 🥇In 2023, Martyn etched his name in the history books as the first para athlete to win international medals in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at the Indonesia Para Badminton Tournament. 🏸🎉 This was just one highlight in a record-breaking year that saw Martyn capture six international medals, the most won by a para athlete in a single year excluding continental events.  With only a year of competitive badminton under their belt, Martyn has achieved a world ranking of 19th in singles, 15th in doubles, and 12th in mixed doubles, showcasing a remarkable ascension in the sport. 🥳Off the badminton court, Martyn exhibits their athletic versatility as a dedicated player for the Collingwood Football Club's wheelchair AFL team 🏉, eagerly anticipating the upcoming third season and has newly taken up Pickleball in his spare time which he is planning to play competitively in 2024. 🎾 🌟Martyn Ford is not just an athlete; his is a symbol of what can be accomplished with passion and an unyielding spirit, inspiring others to pursue their goals regardless of the obstacles they may face. 👏👊 Now, Martyn's inviting YOU to join him on his Para-Pickleball adventure in Melbourne this May! Today's Cocoon HQ lunch was filled with inspiring stories and a special guest! We were delighted to welcome Esperance from Women's Power of Inspiration (WPI), a non-profit organization empowering women from culturally diverse backgrounds, including refugees and immigrants. Esperance shared WPI's mission to break down barriers and foster economic opportunities for these women, fostering social connections within their communities. We were also touched by Nicky's story from Cocoon Adventures. Nicky shared about a participant who, despite facing health challenges, was determined to rejoin a trip. This unwavering spirit to travel and connect with others is a testament to the transformative power of adventure! It was an inspiring afternoon, and we're grateful to Esperance and Nicky for sharing their stories.
