  • Safe Work Month Week 3 (16-22 October) Theme: Working together to support all workers All workers have the right to be safe at work. When designing safe systems of work, it’s essential to consider the needs of all workers. This includes understanding and addressing the factors that mean some workers may be at higher risk of harm. Being younger, having a culturally and linguistically diverse background, working in a more complex contractual chain, such as a labour hire arrangement, working alone or in an isolated location, or returning to work after an injury or illness can make workers more vulnerable to harm. By working together, we can make work safe for everyone.

  • Did you know that from October 7th to the 15th is Queensland Mental Health Week? This works in really well with theme 2 - Working to protect workers' mental health this Safe Work Month. Mental illness can affect anyone. About half of all Australians experience it in their lifetime, and about one in five experience a mental health issue in any one year. This provides an opportunity to raise community awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health conditions. The theme for 2023 is ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’, which reflects the important factors that help people maintain positive mental health and wellbeing. It is about connecting with the people in our lives and creating space for conversations around mental health and wellbeing.

  • National Safe Work Month Week 2 - Working together to protect workers' mental health. Psychosocial hazards are hazards that can cause psychological (i.e., mental) and physical harm. Psychological harm may include anxiety or depression, while physical harm may involve musculoskeletal or fatigue related injuries. Psychosocial hazards may interact or combine to create new, changed or higher risks. It is important to consider psychosocial hazards workers may be exposed to when managing psychosocial risks. Common psychosocial hazards include: - job demands - low job control - poor support - lack of role clarity - poor organisational change management - inadequate reward and recognition - poor organisational justice - traumatic events or material - remote or isolated work - poor physical environment - violence and aggression - bullying - harassment, including sexual harassment, and - conflict or poor workplace relationships and interactions
