ROAD SAFETY WEEK AT KEIKI 🚦The 5th-12th of May was National Road Safety Week, an Australia-wide initiative to highlight safer behaviours on and around roads. We used this opportunity to bring road safety to the forefront of the educational program across Keiki, supporting children to develop skills, behaviours, and attitudes to become safer while travelling as passengers, pedestrians on the road and in car parks or footpaths, and as users of bikes and wheeled toys. Educators prepared experiences such as:🛑 Constable Care and Smart Steps incursions all about the safe ways of using the road.
🛑 Making traffic lights using recycled box with the red, green and yellow round-shaped papers
🛑 Looking at the signs and cars on the street
🛑 Small world play of streets signs, roads and cars
🛑 Exploring colours red, light and yellow through art stamping, collages and painting
🛑 Learning about street signs and their meanings
🛑 Singing songs about crossing the road safely
🛑 Creating our own zebra crossing in the carpark for the children to practice crossing a road while holding an adult’s hand, looking and listening.
🛑 Holding meaningful discussions about what to do when crossing roads.By giving children the skills and knowledge around road safety, we can help them to keep safe throughout their childhood and beyond. 🧡 Setting up small world play showing what is significant in Educators’ home countries including safari in South Africa, snow season in England and green sensory experience for Ireland;
🧡 Bringing in books and objects from home to read with our friends and learn about one another’s cultures;
🧡 Creating traditional objects such as Korowai cloak from Māori culture from recycled materials and paper lanterns to celebrate the beginning of Ramadan;
🧡 Welcoming family members into the service to share their language, traditions and stories with the children;
🧡 Listening to music and learning cultural dance such as British Maypole dancing;
