Recent news of
Britain’s young professionals emigrating to places like Australia sparks
commentary from Nick Thompson, Owner of online gift shop OverseasGifts.com.
According to a recent article on RT.com titled “British ‘brain
drain’: Young talent quits UK for warmer economic climes”, Britain is
losing its young professionals to countries like Australia and the U.S. The
news prompts a response from the owner of online gift shop OverseasGifts.com.
According to the article, most of the people leaving the UK
are emigrating to seek better economic environments. The British press has
dubbed the emigration of recent British graduates as the ‘talent drain’.
“It’s got some potential implications for Britain that its
young professionals are leaving the country. But I don’t know if it’s truly a
‘talent drain’. They can always come back after a few years in another country
if they can get a job in Britain after getting some work experience elsewhere,”
said Nick Thompson, Owner of OverseasGifts.com.
“What else are they supposed to do if there aren’t enough
jobs for them? Is it really a talent drain if there’s not enough jobs to absorb
the talent to begin with?” he continued.
Statistics from the Office of National Statistics in the UK
show that over 3.5 million people have emigrated from the country in the past
ten years.
Eighty-nine of long-term emigrants were of working age, and
their primary reason for leaving Britain was to look for better economic
prospects.
Additionally, a record amount of college graduates left the
UK last year in search of better job prospects elsewhere.
“Concerns have been raised about the economic implications
of having Britain’s young talent emigrating in record numbers, but the world
today is so global and mobile that I don’t think it will be as big of a threat as
some have made it out to be,” said Mr. Thompson.
“Technology has made it easier to stay in touch with friends
and family. The internet has made even gift giving a lot easier because people
don’t need to worry as much about parcel requirements when sending gifts
overseas. Because of this, people can stay connected even when they are abroad.
That and the low cost air fares available in recent history have made air
travel a lot more accessible than before. People want to see the world, and
innovations driving down the costs of keeping in touch have made it easier for
them to venture out. That’s a reality the government needs to face,” he
continued.
“But precisely because there are less barriers to moving
overseas, these young grads could easily move back to Britain once they have
enough work experience to compete in the UK job market,” said Mr. Thompson.
