What Is a Domain Name and How Does It Work? Today we're going to talk about domain names. We had a lot of questions come through last week about hosting and domain names and all sorts of stuff. People are like, "What's a host? What's a domain name? What's all this stuff?" So, the easiest way to think about it is when you're running a business, you have to have your business name registered. Then you can actually run your business. From there, you might have to rent a building, or you might have to buy some other products, or bits and pieces. Your domain name, which is normally your business name, which for us is dorksdelivered.com.au (selfless plug) is your business name online. If it's a .com, or .au, or a .net.au they have to be linked to an ABN number and be a close and substantial match to what your business name is. Nevertheless, your domain name points to somewhere and that's normally your hosting provider. So, your domain name's nearly never going to break and you can easily transfer it between places. Most all good hosting providers will transfer it for you for free, and will normally give you a couple of months to sweeten the deal, so make sure you're not going with a shady, shady place. Once you have your domain name it's pointing toward your host. Your host is where your website and your files are stored, and it's also normally what's called your DNS. This DNS is kind of like a directory to explain to a new business where your email and website are stored, along with some other bits and pieces. Now, when they host your DNS, your emails, your website and other bits and pieces, that's all within in the hosting container. If something is going to go wrong, it's normally in that container, so you don't need to worry about who you register your domain name with for the most part. You just want to make sure that if there is a problem, you're going to your host to fix the issue. Good luck!
