I hear this all the time. Brilliant professionals - experts in their field - say to me: “Michelle, I know my content back to front. But when it comes to presenting it? I just don’t feel confident.” If that sounds like you, please know you’re not alone. In my presentation skills workshops in Sydney, I meet highly capable professionals every week who feel exactly the same way. They know their subject matter inside out yet presenting their ideas clearly and persuasively still feels uncomfortable. The good news? Presenting is a skill you can absolutely learn and master. Over the past 27 years I’ve helped more than 13,500 professionals build confidence through my presentation skills workshop programs and coaching. And one key insight consistently transforms the way people communicate. Great presenting is about more than just your expertise. Great presenting is about more than your content Many professionals assume that knowing their subject matter well should be enough. Unfortunately, persuasive presenting isn’t just about sharing information or explaining data. It’s about tailoring your message, so your audience understands it, remembers it and acts on it. That’s why the most effective presenters follow a simple formula built around three phases: Analysis, Design and Delivery. 1. Analysis – Understand Your Audience Before you even open PowerPoint, stop and ask yourself a few key questions: Who is my audience? What do they believe right now about this topic? What matters most to them? What objections or concerns might they have? Too many presenters skip this step and jump straight into their technical content. The fact is that your message will only land if you understand where your audience is starting from - emotionally, intellectually and politically. The better you understand your audience, the more persuasive your presentation becomes. 2. Design – Structure Creates Confidence Once you understand your audience, the next step is designing your message using a proven structure. This is where my 13-step Persuasion Blueprint comes in - the model I teach in every presentation skills course I run. Whether you’re presenting to the board, briefing a client or updating your team, structure creates clarity. And clarity builds confidence. A well-designed presentation ensures your message is logical, engaging and focused on outcomes. 3. Delivery – Bring Your Message to Life Once your message is clear, it’s time to deliver it. Strong delivery involves vocal variety, confident body language, meaningful eye contact and managing your nerves. Even if you feel nervous inside, simple techniques like connecting directly with your audience can dramatically change how confident you appear. This is something participants practise extensively in my presentation skills workshop in Sydney. The goal isn’t perfection - it’s connection. You don’t need to sound like a newsreader or perform like a stand-up comedian. You simply need to communicate clearly, confidently and authentically. So, what’s next? If you’re a subject matter expert who wants to feel more confident presenting your ideas, remember: You don’t need to be born with the “gift of the gab.” You don’t need to be naturally charismatic. You simply need the right tools, formulas and structure. When you combine strong preparation with audience-focused messaging, presenting becomes far easier - and far more persuasive.
