11/26/2025 Planning to gain hands-on experience and professional development in the Land Down Under? The 407 training visa
is a solid pathway for individuals worldwide who want to undertake
occupational training in Australia. It’s a temporary visa, specifically
designed for workplace-based training or professional development, and
it allows you to stay in the country for up to two years. Think of it as
a structured opportunity to truly hone your craft while immersing
yourself in an Australian workplace environment.
What is the 407 Training Visa and How Does it Work?
The
Subclass 407 visa is essentially a training tool, not a straightforward
work visa. Its primary purpose is to allow you to participate in
structured training to improve your skills, meet mandatory registration
requirements, or build capacity overseas. The training program itself
must align with one of three key streams:
- Occupational Training Required for Registration: This stream is for people who need workplace-based training to get an occupation registration, membership, or licensing, either in Australia or their home country, which is mandatory to work in their field.
- Structured Workplace-Based Training to Enhance Skills: This is for skilled individuals who need a structured program to enhance their skills in an eligible occupation. You generally need recent and relevant experience or study in that field.
- Occupational Training for Capacity Building Overseas:
This stream is often for overseas students needing practical training
for a qualification, government-supported training, or professional
development for managerial/professional employees of overseas companies.
Unpacking the 407 Training Visa Requirements
Before you start packing your bags, you need to tick off a few key boxes. The eligibility criteria are quite clear-cut, ensuring that the visa is used for its intended training purpose.
Key Applicant Requirements:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old, though there are limited exceptions.
- Sponsorship and Nomination: You need a confirmed nomination from an approved temporary activities sponsor. This sponsor must provide a structured training program tailored to your needs.
- Experience/Study: In most cases, you must have at least 12 months of full-time work or study experience in your nominated occupation (or a closely related field) within the 24 months immediately before the nomination application.
- Functional English: You must demonstrate at least functional English language skills. This is vital for safety in the workplace and to ensure you can effectively participate in the training.
- Temporary Intent: You must genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of the training.
- Health and Character: Like most Australian visas, you must meet the standard health and character requirements. You also need to maintain adequate health insurance for the entire duration of your stay.
The training itself must be substantial and workplace-based. For most occupational training streams, the program must:
- Be for at least 30 hours a week.
- Involve at least 70 per cent of the training conducted in the workplace, as opposed to classroom instruction.
