01/24/2013 Each year, Australian rescue centers and shelters euthanize thousands of healthy cats and dogs. This is partly due to public resistance to adopting pets versus buying them. People often think that buying a new pet gives them a clean slate in training them. However, regardless of where the pet came from, pet training firms like Sit Drop Stay help pet owners create harmonious relationships with their pets.
A recent episode of “The Tail End” goes over why Australia is killing so many pet dogs and cats. Deathrowpets.net, an advocacy group, estimates that about 250,000 unwanted cats and dogs are killed in Australian pounds every year. Part of the reason is due to public resistance to adopting pets from rescue centers and shelters.
Tim Vasudeva of the Animal Welfare League NSW recommends that people try adopting rescue pets instead of buying a new pet when they want one. “We need to do a better job of educating the community about what great pets we have through rescue and shelters and people. There are a lot of people out there who don’t ever associate adopting or purchasing a pet from a shelter,” said Mr. Vasudeva.
The reason many people usually opt to buy a new pet instead of adopting one is that they often want to start on a clean slate. They want to train their pet from scratch instead of having to deal with a matured pet with its own past and history. However, regardless of whether they opt for a rescue pet or a brand new one, pet owners will need to train their pets for obedience. Oftentimes, the process of training a pet--especially a dog--can be tedious and confusing. There are many training methods out there, and it can be hard to know which method of training is best for the pet.
There are dog training methods that use treats, balls, toys, clickers, chokers, halties, and prong or electric collars. They all work, but according to Sit Drop Stay, a dog training firm, those methods do not help to stabilize the dogs’ minds. “Our dogs reflect back to us our unresolved emotions. So understanding our own behaviour and emotions and how our dogs interpret them are most important in correcting dog obedience problems,” explained George Lygidakis, Sit Drop Stay’s Head Trainer and Director.
About Sit Drop Stay
Sit Drop Stay was founded by George Lygidakis in response to an urgent need to improve the quality of dog training and knowledge of canine behavior in Australia. Too many dogs are abandoned or have a poor quality of life due to poor training. Dogs are often turned away from obedience clubs because they don’t fit into their particular training system. Many dogs are also currently great at doing “tricks” at obedience clubs but are unmanageable at home or in public. Families and relationships are often under unnecessary stress due to their lack of understanding of canine behaviour. In the majority of cases one or two consultations is all that is required to address the problem.
