A
diabetic customer recently sued the beauty parlor that caused her to suffer
burns from her nail service. Pat Liapis of Direct Salon Equipment talks about
how the right salon supplies can lessen these cases of negligence.
March 7, 2013 – Last month, the cased was
finally closed after a 66 year-old woman sued the hair and nail parlor in
California that caused her to stay in the hospital for a month due to
negligence. The salon had to pay $20,000,000 because of the damages that they
have caused.
The woman is a diabetic and has been
visiting the beauty parlor for five years already. Her pedicurist already knows
about her diabetes and the extra caution that needs to be taken when caring for
her foot since the condition causes her to have little feeling and sensitivity
in her lower extremities.
When she came in for a pedicure last
January 2012, she was the only customer present. The pedicurist did the usual
routine of soaking her feet in the tub of water before they start with the nail
trimming. She asked the client about the warmth, and when the client said it
was fine, she walked away and was not able to return for a long time. She left
the customer seating in the pedicure chair with her feet soaking in hot water
unattended.
When she came back, they went on with the
nail trimming. It was not until the evening when the client went home that she
noticed blisters on her foot. The client also experienced high fever at that
night.
When the woman was brought to the hospital
the next morning, she had third degree burns. Skin grafts were performed on her
left foot. She was also placed for dialysis since kidney damage occurred due to
the burn toxins.
The beauty parlor owner fired the pedicurist.
He also said that the incident may have happened partly because the electric
tub that was used was also malfunctioning. It should not have caused that much
heat.
Pat Liapis, owner of Direct Salon
Equipment, says that it is important to invest on the right equipment in order
to make clients safe and allow stylists to work in a better way. He explains
that “Businesses must pay attention to the products they use. For salons that
plan to stay in the business for the long term, it makes sense to invest on the
right things from the very beginning.”
